What is amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is a rare disease caused by the build-up of a protein called amyloid in various organs and tissues in the body.

What are the symptoms of amyloidosis?

Symptoms of amyloidosis can vary depending on the organs and tissues affected, but can include fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling in the legs and ankles, and neuropathy.

What organs and tissues can be affected by amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis can affect many different organs and tissues in the body, including the heart, kidneys, liver, nervous system, and digestive tract.

What causes amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is usually caused by abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow that produce abnormal proteins, which can then form amyloid deposits in various organs and tissues.

Is amyloidosis curable?

There is currently no cure for amyloidosis, but treatments exist to manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

Who is at risk for amyloidosis?

Individuals over the age of 50 and those with a family history of amyloidosis or certain other conditions are at an increased risk for developing the disease.

What is chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells in the body.

What is immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses the body's immune system to fight cancer cells.

What is a plasma cell?

A plasma cell is a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to fight off infections and diseases.

What is a bone marrow biopsy?

A bone marrow biopsy is a procedure that involves taking a small sample of bone marrow tissue for examination under a microscope.

What is a biopsy?

A biopsy is a medical test that involves taking a small sample of tissue or cells from the body for examination under a microscope.

What is dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical treatment that uses a machine to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are no longer able to do so on their own.

What is a heart transplant?

A heart transplant is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a damaged or diseased heart with a healthy heart from a donor.

What is the prognosis for amyloidosis?

The outlook for amyloidosis varies depending on the type and severity of the disease, but treatments are available to manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
