What is a chemical reaction?

A process in which substances are transformed into different substances with different properties.

What are the signs of a chemical reaction?

Formation of a gas, formation of a precipitate, color change, release or absorption of heat and/or light.

What is an endothermic reaction?

A reaction that absorbs heat from the surroundings, causing the temperature of the surroundings to decrease.

What is an exothermic reaction?

A reaction that releases heat to the surroundings, causing the temperature of the surroundings to increase.

What is a catalyst?

A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing permanent changes itself.

What is a balanced chemical equation?

A representation of a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and coefficients to show the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the equation.

What is the law of conservation of mass?

The principle that states that mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction.

What is a decomposition reaction?

A reaction where a compound breaks down into simpler substances.

What is a combustion reaction?

A reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen, usually producing heat and light.

What is a synthesis reaction?

A reaction where two or more substances combine to form a more complex substance.

What is a displacement reaction?

A reaction where one element replaces another element in a compound.

What is an acid-base reaction?

A reaction between an acid and a base, resulting in the formation of water and a salt.

What is a redox reaction?

A reaction where there is a transfer of electrons from one species to another.

What is the difference between an exergonic and endergonic reaction?

An exergonic reaction releases energy, while an endergonic reaction absorbs energy.

What factors can affect the rate of a chemical reaction?

Temperature, concentration, surface area, catalysts, and pressure (if reactants are gases).
