What is a mountain?

A large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level; a steep-sided, tall and rugged landform that stretches above the surrounding land.

What is a valley?

A low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it.

Define plateau.

A flat-topped elevated landform that rises sharply above the surrounding area on at least one side.

What is a plain?

A large area of flat or gently rolling land with few changes in elevation.

Explain what a desert is.

A barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.

What is a river?

A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream.

Define coastline.

The area where land meets the sea or ocean.

Explain what a peninsula is.

A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water.

What is an island?

A piece of land surrounded by water.

Define volcano.

A mountain or hill, typically conical, that is formed through the eruption of lava, ash, and gases from a vent in the Earth's crust.

What is a canyon?

A deep gorge, typically with a river flowing through it, as found in the southwestern United States.

Explain what a hill is.

A naturally elevated area of land, smaller than a mountain, with sloping sides and rounded summit.

What is a lake?

A large body of water surrounded by land.

Define fjord.

A narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or steep slopes.

What is a delta?

A landform created by deposition of sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving or standing water.
