Flashcards on Physics: Waves and Optics
Click on the flashcard to see the answer
What is a wave?
A disturbance that carries energy through a medium or empty space.
What are the two main types of waves?
Transverse waves and longitudinal waves.
Define wavelength.
The distance between two corresponding points on adjacent waves, such as the distance between two crests or two troughs.
What is the formula to calculate wave speed?
Wave speed = frequency x wavelength
What is reflection?
The bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface through which it cannot pass.
What is refraction?
The bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another.
What is diffraction?
The bending of waves around obstacles or the spreading of waves past small openings.
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
What is the lens formula?
1/f = 1/v - 1/u
What is the focal length of a converging lens?
The distance from the center of the lens to the focal point.
What is the focal length of a diverging lens?
The distance from the center of the lens to the point where light appears to diverge from.
What is the relationship between frequency and pitch in sound waves?
Frequency determines the pitch of a sound. Higher frequency means higher pitch.
What is the unit of frequency?
Hertz (Hz)
What is the unit of wavelength?
Meter (m)
What is the unit of wave speed?
Meter per second (m/s)
