Flashcards on Physics: Waves and Optics
Click on the flashcard to see the answer
What is a wave?
A disturbance that carries energy through space or matter.
What is the amplitude of a wave?
The maximum displacement of particles in a wave from their rest position.
What is the frequency of a wave?
The number of complete waves passing a point in a given time.
What is the wavelength of a wave?
The distance between two corresponding points on adjacent waves.
What is the speed of a wave?
The distance a wave travels per unit time.
What is reflection of light?
The bouncing back of light when it hits a surface.
What is refraction of light?
The bending of light when it enters a different medium.
What is diffraction of waves?
The bending of waves around obstacles or through openings.
What is interference of waves?
The overlapping of waves resulting in their reinforcement or cancellation.
What is polarization of light?
The restriction of light vibrations to a single plane.
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
What is Snell's law?
The ratio of the sines of the angles of incidence and refraction is equal to the ratio of the speeds of light in the two media.
What is the principle of superposition?
When two or more waves meet, the resulting displacement is the algebraic sum of their individual displacements.
What is constructive interference?
When two waves meet and their displacements add together, resulting in a wave with greater amplitude.
What is destructive interference?
When two waves meet and their displacements cancel each other out, resulting in a wave with smaller or no amplitude.
