What are tectonic plates?

Large pieces of Earth's lithosphere that fit together like a puzzle.

What are the three types of plate boundaries?

Convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries.

What happens at a convergent plate boundary?

Two plates collide, forming mountains, volcanoes, or trenches.

What happens at a divergent plate boundary?

Two plates move apart, creating new crust and causing seafloor spreading.

What happens at a transform plate boundary?

Two plates slide past each other horizontally, causing earthquakes.

What is a subduction zone?

An area where one plate is forced beneath another into the mantle.

What is the Ring of Fire?

A major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

What is continental drift?

The theory that continents were once joined together and have slowly moved apart over millions of years.

What is the theory of plate tectonics?

The theory that Earth's lithosphere is divided into plates that move and interact with each other.

What is the Earth's outermost layer called?

The crust.

What is the layer beneath the crust called?

The mantle.

What is the theory that explains how new crust is formed?

The theory of seafloor spreading.

What are some major tectonic plates?

Eurasian Plate, African Plate, North American Plate, Pacific Plate.

What is a hotspot?

An area of volcanic activity that is stationary while the tectonic plate moves above it, creating a chain of volcanic islands.

What is the largest tectonic plate?

The Pacific Plate.
