Flashcards on Types of Waves

Click on the flashcard to see the answer

What are mechanical waves?

Waves that require a medium to travel through.

What are electromagnetic waves?

Waves that can travel through empty space.

What are transverse waves?

Waves in which the particles of the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the wave.

What are longitudinal waves?

Waves in which the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave.

What are surface waves?

Waves that travel along the boundary of two different mediums.

What are sound waves?

Mechanical waves that require a medium to travel and can be heard by human ears.

What are radio waves?

Electromagnetic waves with the longest wavelengths, used for communication.

What are microwaves?

Electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths than radio waves, used for cooking and communication.

What are infrared waves?

Electromagnetic waves with longer wavelengths than visible light, primarily responsible for heat transfer.

What are ultraviolet waves?

Electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths than visible light, responsible for sunburns and vitamin D synthesis.

What are X-rays?

Electromagnetic waves with smaller wavelengths than ultraviolet waves, used in medical imaging.

What are gamma rays?

Electromagnetic waves with the shortest wavelengths, produced by nuclear reactions.

What are ocean waves?

Mechanical waves created by the wind transferring energy to the surface of the ocean.

What are earthquake waves?

Mechanical waves generated by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface.

What are light waves?

Electromagnetic waves within the visible spectrum, allowing us to see objects.
