What is a food web?

A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between different organisms in an ecosystem.

What is a trophic level?

The position an organism occupies in a food chain, indicating its feeding relationship to other organisms.

What are producers?

Organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.

What are herbivores?

Organisms that feed only on plants.

What are carnivores?

Organisms that feed only on other animals.

What are omnivores?

Organisms that feed on both plants and animals.

What is a decomposer?

An organism that breaks down dead plant and animal material, returning nutrients to the soil.

What is a primary consumer?

An organism that feeds directly on producers (plants).

What is a secondary consumer?

An organism that feeds on primary consumers.

What is a tertiary consumer?

An organism that feeds on secondary consumers.

What happens to energy as it moves up the trophic levels?

Energy is lost as heat at each level, resulting in less energy available at higher trophic levels.

What is a food chain?

A linear sequence of organisms showing the flow of energy in an ecosystem.

What is the difference between a food web and a food chain?

A food web is a complex network of interconnected food chains, while a food chain is a simple linear sequence.

What is an apex predator?

A predator at the top of the food chain, not preyed upon by any other predator.

What is the role of decomposers in an ecosystem?

Decomposers break down dead organic matter, releasing nutrients back into the environment for other organisms to use.
